These Bare Hills

As Wellington’s oldest restoration projects turns 30, Māori, punks, Catholic Sisters, nerds, environmentalists and locals celebrate transforming these bare hills into an emerging forest.

‘These Bare Hills’ is a fun, inspirational and observational documentary about Manawa Karioi, Wellington's oldest reforestation project, celebrating it's 30-year anniversary.

There are over 100 restoration projects in Greater Wellington, all with the aim of restoring the biodiversity of the local forests.

We chose to profile this special project because of the compelling story behind the project, the urban setting and the unorthodox combination of people involved with it.

There is a huge groundswell of New Zealanders focused on restoring the forests all around Aotearoa. We want to explore this passionate response to climate change that has become a nationwide movement.
