Toitu te Tiriti

Written by Ness Patea.

Ruth and I attended the Hikoi in te Whanganui-a-Tara on the 18th November, 2024.

Ruth walked the hikoi with her family and some friends, and I did a half day shoot for our new Awa Films TV series called Life in the FFN (Far Far North). Some of our talent were here for the hikoi so they were our focus and then Sacha our camera man disappeared into the crowds to pick up more amazing coverage and drone shots of the event.

The Saupese whanau joining the Hikoi from the Far North.

A drone shot of Parliament grounds, not even showing how big the turnout was!

After the shoot, I took some photos around Waitangi park, then I rode my bike to parliament, locked it up at the train station and positioned myself on the cenotaph to take some photos of the historic event.

Young guy with a flair on the bus-stop. There was smoke everywhere!

The peaceful hikoi had all walks of life including a gang presence.

It was real treat to see the horseback protestors outside te Papa.

After the Hikoi and the flood of Hikoi/Toitu te Tiriti content on social media, Ruth and I were inspired to write submissions for the Treaty Principals Bill. We decided to publish our letters here in the hopes of inspiring other people to write submissions.
